For the past two months, e-business sophomore Chen Yu, along with five of her classmates, has been assembling a business plan detailing location, interior design and equipment for the first of 50 chain stores in Chengdu, Sichuan Province.

But this is no classroom rehearsal – Chengdu Vocational and Technical College (CDVTC) selected these students as part of its pilot training course focusing on management and nutritional sciences.

The fruits of their labor? Actual fruit, sold in the flagship Fruit Life store on Jinfeng Road, Qingyang district, a shopping street with heavy foot traffic. Chen was selected as the first shop's manager on the college's recommendation, due to her passion and her business background.

"The program is to help students start their own business while bringing healthy living to the local community. At the same time, it also helps provide a new market for local fruit farmers," explained Wang Hong, chief manager of the Sichuan Yuwang Ecosystem Agriculture Development, the chief investor in the store. The company invested 300,000 yuan ($43,949) into the first store, accounting for 40 percent ownership; 40 percent belongs to students from the college, and the rest 20 percent is used as rewards for excellent managers and staff, according to Wang.

In the 150-square-meter shop, "fruit doctors" will provide "prescriptions" for customers according to their health, work and living habits. The shop is also equipped with machines to check for pesticide residue to better ensure the safety of the fruit sold.

"Chinese gooseberry, lemons, pears and red grapes. These fruits are good for brainpower and improving immunity," Wang said. The shop offers both fruit slicing and juicing services, and eager consumers can enjoy their purchases at the store's fruit bar.

Chen puts in over 10 hours a day. Since she often leaves work too late to catch a bus, she ends up taking cabs home. To make up the money she loses on transport costs, she once ate instant noodles for two weeks straight.

"Whenever I see instant noodles, I feel sick," she said, "But if I start feeling down, I just tell myself that I'm starting my business, and I cheer up again." As an e-business major, "I'll use what I learn here to build an online shop for the store to further explore the potential market, " Chen said.

Their hard work has garnered support from the local community.

One day, a customer arrived after hearing about the store in the local media and bought 12.5kg-fruit at worth of 150 yuan. "I reminded him that it's difficult to keep so much fruit fresh," Chen said, "He said he had also started a business after graduating from a local vocational school and was coming to support us. Hearing that, I was touched."

According to Wang, the shop brought in 30,000 yuan on its opening day of February 27.

"These students are very bright, hard working and have the passion to run their own business," Wang said, "They'll learn fast through this opportunity."
